Pneumonia is attributable to pneumococcal infection in 50 % of all cases.

- Persons with chronic conditions (e.g. cardiac disease, diabetes, asthma or chronic bronchitis)
- Persons with compromised immune systems
- Children
How can I protect myself?
If you belong to one of these risk groups, it is advisable for you to be immunised against infection with pneumococcus!
Inoculation of high risk children
Children considered to be in a high risk category can also be inoculated against pneumococcal infection free of charge under our child inoculation programme. For more information, please see the inoculation schedule.
When and how often do I need to be immunised?
You will be protected within some two weeks of receiving your shot; you will be immune for approximately 5 years.
