The 22 organisations that make up the group of statutory insurance providers in Austria are responsible for health, pension and accident insurance. The Main Association of Austrian Social Security Organisations undertakes a number of important coordination functions.

The main principles on which the Austrian social security system is based are those of statutory insurance, solidarity and the self-administration of the insurance providers. The social security system is mainly funded through a pay-as-you-go scheme.
