Organisation

“Social security is the most reliable foundation stone of any democracy.” Johann Böhm, first President of the Main Association of Austrian Social Security Organisations (1948 - 1959)

The Austrian statutory insurance system forms the basis of the social security system in Austria.

The statutory insurance system provides health, pension and accident insurance. The provision of unemployment benefits, social care and support further extends the social safety network in Austria.

The main principles on which the Austrian social security system is based are those of statutory insurance, solidarity and the self-administration of the insurance providers. The social security system is mainly funded through a pay-as-you-go scheme.

Organisations
The 22 organisations that make up the group of statutory insurance providers in Austria are responsible for health, pension and accident insurance. The Main Association of Austrian Social Security Organisations undertakes a number of important coordination functions.
